SOBER LIVING, THERAPEUTIC COMMUNITIES.
SOLVING HOMELESSNESS, THE SALVATION ARMY WAY.

Rebuilding Lives
One Story at a Time

What is 'The Way Out'?

San Francisco is experiencing a humanitarian crisis. We’re here to deliver a solution.

Homelessness, drug addiction, and untreated mental illness is all around us. But it doesn’t have to be. The Salvation Army believes that every person who wants a way out should have it.

On any given night in San Francisco, The Salvation Army provides 750 beds in its facilities
across the City to the unhoused.

The Way Out is The Salvation Army’s ambitious initiative to add up to 1000 beds for San Francisco’s homeless population by redeveloping several of its existing properties. It is a groundbreaking, first-in-the-city program that combines stable housing with workforce training and wraparound social services to help unhoused clients who suffer from substance abuse disorder gain control over their futures, achieve economic independence, and permanently move off the streets.

What The Way Out Offers

A compassion-first model that incorporates three best practices proven to reduce clients’ recidivism by 90% over short-term treatment. To-date, 50% of clients in The Way Out Program have found their way out of homelessness.

Our approach is to provide:

PROVIDING A PROVEN PATH, FOR ANYONE WHO WANTS IT.

What We Believe

Residents should have choices and multiple options for therapy

Our programs should offer results and full transparency

Our culture should be based on mutual accountability and effective outcomes

Clients must have high expectations for themselves, each other, and the community
Not a Revolving Door
During the first 15 months of our pilot program, 86% of participants who completed the program achieved stable housing.*
