With Holiday Giving Down, The Salvation Army Announces $20 Red Kettle Challenge

$20 will be worth double on one day only – Saturday, December 14, 2019

 

 

 

December 9, 2019 – San Francisco, CA. - The Salvation Army reports that their biggest annual fundraiser nationwide, the Red Kettle campaign has gotten off to a slow start. And with the bell ringing season short six days this year, kettle donations are more crucial than ever. Holiday donations which fund programs for the needy year-round, including homeless services, meals for the hungry, and after school programs for low-income children are down. 

On one day only, Saturday, December 14, $20 bills will be worth double the amount in red kettle locations throughout San Francisco County. Anyone who puts a $20 bill or check in a kettle that day will doing so knowing that it will be matched by a donor.  Also, checks divisible by $20 that state $20 challenge in the memo line will be matched.

“The need is great for struggling families and individuals, particularly during the holiday season. So, we are counting on the kindness of our community to come on out to a red kettle and donate a $20 bill. It will go a long way to help make Christmas bright for many of our community’s less fortunate,” said Captain Matt Madsen, Divisional Secretary, The Salvation Army, San Francisco.   

 

Programs supported include:

  • Social services where programs provide food, shelter, clothing and financial assistance;
  • Casework and counseling, with programs for health care and residential assistance and abuse counseling;
  • Youth services, with programs for music, athletics, arts and crafts, camping and family counseling;
  • Senior centers, focused on assisting the needs of older adults
  • Holiday programs, in which the distinctive Red Kettles are a centerpiece, to help families and individuals financially at year-end;
  • Salvation Army Community Centers across San Francisco, including the SOMA, Tenderloin and Inner Richmond neighborhoods.
